SMCC IT

For my STEM project this semester I helped the IT department demo wire in the student enrollment services building and helped rack a storage server.

Most of my time spent with the SMCC IT department was demoing cable that was in the SES building. The building was under construction at the time and they decided that new cable needed to be ran through since it had been so long since the old one was put in. I got to experience how to properly pull cabling, which involves, making sure the right cable is pulled out of the punch down block in the server room, pulling off ethernet wall plates, pulling cable out of walls, and cutting the cables to pull them through the j hooks on the walls and metal supports.

During this time I was also able to experience how to rack a server for the first time. A new storage server was going in to the main server room on campus and it needed to be put into the rack. I helped load the server onto the rails and push the server into the rack. After pushing in some pins on  the rail we were able to push the server fully into the rack to close the door. The part that I didn't get to experience firsthand was placing the two power supplies into the server, this was because they didn't need to boot up the server until the following week in order to set it up.

Unfortunately my time with the SMCC IT department was cut short because of the epidemic, which led to the campus being shut down and I couldn't go back.
